Utility Management Association, Utilities Provider for City of Muscatine Iowa Utilizes Host Analytic

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) February 11, 2008 -- Host Analytics, the leader in on-demand Corporate Performance Management software solutions, today announced that Muscatine Power, and Water, a municipal utility, provider of water, electricity, and communications utilities to the city of Muscatine and surrounding area, is using Host Budget to eliminate time-consuming and inefficient Excel spreadsheets from their budgeting and planning process.

As a local utility company, Muscatine Power and Water provides electricity to approximately 11,156 customers and water to approximately 9,412 customers pumping an average of 26.0 million gallons of water each day. The company also supplies cable and high-speed Internet services to thousands of local residents. With over 50 people involved in the budgeting process, Muscatine Power and Water's Accounting and Finance Department recognized the need to replace Excel spreadsheets with a single, Web-based budgeting solution.

"Consolidating several dozen spreadsheets without a common format was not only error-prone, it was time consuming and inefficient," said Cassie Mathias, Accounting Supervisor for Muscatine Power and Water. "We evaluated several other software providers and found Host Analytics to be the most fitting with our architecture and the most cost-effective solution. Although the budgeting process for any department outside of finance is not considered fun, the Web-based interface and easy menus have reduced the displeasure of budgeting for our users. The ability for users to make changes to their budget "on the fly" has been another added benefit for our users."

The Software In Action

Muscatine Power and Water is using a general ledger system provided by Mitchell Humphrey which is integrated with Host Budget. The existing level of integration between the two systems will enable Muscatine to pull information from the GL into Host Budget and view budget versus actuals in real-time, thus creating a new level of transparency and accountability across the entire organization.

Budgeting of Direct Costs

Muscatine Power and Water currently budgets all of the general line items including marketing, workforce costs, travel and capital. In addition, they also budget for electric and water consumption and communications subscriber levels. This data feeds into their rate and cost structures to calculate revenues, production costs and programming expenses.

In the future, Muscatine expects to leverage Host Budget to plan and complete their 10-year financial projections. In the meantime, the entity will create an annual operational budget and track this against actuals to re-forecast to gain a clear picture of what the year will look like.
